Meet the Faculty!
Academic Enrichment Program Manager
Programs: Health Science
Michele K. Long joined the faculty at the Pennsylvania Institute of Technology as Program Manager for the Academic Enrichment Program in 2005. She earned a bachelor degree from Pennsylvania State University and holds a number of post-graduate certifications in the field of information technology. She also earned a certificate in Network Engineering Technology Administration as a Certified Novell Administrator.
One of her first assignments after joining the College was to create a curriculum that assisted students in strengthening their skills in mathematics, reading comprehension and English.
Michele established the Academic Developmental Program that enables students to strengthen these important skills, while continuing to complete courses in their program of study. This “side-by-side” approach facilitates skill strengthening without delaying graduation for students seeking either associate degrees or certificates.
The College Board, a nationwide educational organization, recognized P.I.T.’s Academic Developmental Program, cited the program as one the College Board’s “Best Practices” student remediation programs in the country. ADP, the precursor to the Academic Enrichment Program, has been included in the College Board’s Compact College Keys Catalog of Effective Practices.
Michele’s passion for student success led to the development of an on-line educational component to the Academic Enrichment Program for degree and certificate students. This new program, the Emporium Concept, enables students to work at their own pace strengthening skills in mathematics, reading comprehension and English.
Ms. Long was instrumental in the development and approval by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania State Nursing Board of the College’s Practical Nursing program. She was also actively involved in the establishment of the College’s Physical Therapist Assistant program and the approval of the Application for Candidacy by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education.
Michele is a member of Pennsylvania Association of Developmental Educators and the National Association for Developmental Education. Additionally, Michele was recognized by the Rose Tree Media Optimist Club as Outstanding Educator of the Year. The College awarded Michele an Outstanding Faculty Award in 2007 in recognition of her dedication to students and professorial skills. The American Association of Community Colleges honored her at its annual convention for contributions to the field of student success at a two-year college.
