Our associate degree sonography program at P.I.T. serves the local community and dedicated students by providing the training and proper education needed to fulfill the duties of a diagnostic medical sonographer.

Sonographers are highly skilled professionals who use imaging equipment that emits sound waves directed toward internal organs, blood vessels, tissues, and other structures to create images. Ultrasound is commonly used to monitor fetal growth, along with imaging the heart, the abdomen, gynecological, vascular, and musculoskeletal systems.
Physicians heavily rely on sonographers to be the “eyes” inside the patient and aid in early diagnosis. Once obtaining a medical diagnostic sonographer degree, you will be able to work in settings such as:
Through our associate degree sonography program, graduates will be prepared to conduct general sonography tasks. With additional training, graduates can perform cardiac sonography, vascular technology, and other sub-specialties. We prepare our students to complete any task in multiple work environments.
The philosophy of this program is to educate and develop skilled sonographers in the field of Diagnostic Medical Sonography and to assist them in understanding the importance of their role on the allied health care team as they contribute to total patient care.
The following specific outcomes have been adopted by the Pennsylvania Institute of Technology Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program for its twenty-four-month program leading to an associate in science degree:
Demonstrate effective patient care through the practical application of medical sonography in accordance with CAAHEP protocols.
Demonstrate respect for interpersonal relationships, including moral and ethical responsibilities to increase effective communication and empathy for the diverse patient population with an awareness of cultural diversity within the community.
Recognize pathologies and their influence on sonographic techniques.
Produce diagnostic images consistent with industry standards and protocols.
You will learn how to use ultrasound imaging equipment to capture diagnostic images of internal organs, blood vessels, and tissues. Coursework includes abdominal, obstetric and gynecologic, vascular, and musculoskeletal sonography, along with patient care, anatomy, pathology recognition, and clinical imaging protocols.
