Neurodiagnostic Technology Certificate

Neurodiagnostic technology is a scientific field devoted to the recording and study of electrical activity of the brain (brain waves) and other physiological variables such as eye movements, muscle activity, cardiac rhythms and respiratory events. Neurodiagnostic technologists deal with a variety of patients who range in age from newborns to the elderly.

Students will receive the instruction necessary to perform NDT procedures which are essential for the clinical investigation of many neurological, neurosurgical and sleep disorders; disorders such as epilepsy, brain injuries, stroke, headaches, brain tumors, “brain death”, insomnia, excessive daytime sleepiness, sleep apnea, narcolepsy, and multiple sclerosis. Students will gain the technical skills necessary to operate sophisticated NDT equipment in a variety of settings including operating rooms and intensive care units.

Training is delivered in a variety of settings including our seated on-campus program, continuing education courses, as well as individualized and on-site instruction.

The curriculum for the Neurodiagnostic Technology program has been designed to educate students within a 12-month time period. There are two distinct facets of the program:

Academic – the didactic aspects of the program.

Clinical – the technical/clinical aspects of the program.

About the NDT Program

The In-Person Program

Seated Student Learning Experience Students enrolled on the seated format of the Neurodiagnostic Program are scheduled to attend school/clinical rotations Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of each week. The days and times of operation vary according to the laboratory and academic schedule. While rotating through clinical sites, students are required to adhere to the rotating laboratory’s schedule. Students are encouraged to take advantage of all academic and clinical opportunities as they participate in the program.

The Online Program

Online Program Enrollment Policy:

Students may enroll in the online program under the following conditions:

  • Distance Requirement – Students must reside more than 30 miles from P.I.T.
  • Employment at a Hospital – Students who live within 30 miles of P.I.T. may enroll online if they are currently employed at a hospital that is willing to serve as their clinical site.
  • Online Application Due April 1st

The online curriculum targets students who do not have access to traditional NDT training programs. These courses are similar to those offered in our traditional in-person program in that they require completion of weekly academic and clinical assignments. Academic instruction is done through Canvas. Students will have regular contact with P.I.T.’s experienced NDT instructors.

Upon successful completion of the Neurodiagnostic Technology program curriculum courses students will receive a certificate of completion in Neurodiagnostic Technology and able to obtain a job as a Neurodiagnostic technologist.

Online NDT students are required to attend clinical rotations two days a week in an NDT lab under the direction of an ABRET registered EEG technologist (R.EEG T). Those applying for acceptance into the program will be required to provide documentation from a clinical site willing to have a student two days a week for the entirety of the program prior to starting the course. Approval of clinical sites will be at the discretion of the Clinical Neurophysiology faculty on a case-by-case basis. ABRET Accredited laboratories are recommended but not required. Careers with a Neurodiagnostic Technology Certificate

Employment opportunities in the field of NDT are excellent. In recent years, there has been an increase in the utilization of EEG and neurodiagnostic procedures and a shortage of trained technologists. Graduates from accredited NDT training programs have employment opportunities at hospitals, physicians’ offices, staffing agencies, and businesses providing medical and surgical equipment.

The Neurodiagnostic Technology Certificate Program reports 100% job placement: all 2025 graduates have achieved employment, and the 2024 and 2023 cohorts—while the program was based at Crozer Health—also achieved 100% job placement.

Program Objectives

Upon completion of this program, graduates will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate competency in performing entry-level neurodiagnostic procedures, including electroencephalography (EEG), with foundational knowledge of evoked potentials (EP), long-term monitoring (LTM), intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IONM), nerve conduction studies (NCS), and polysomnography (PSG), in accordance with current professional standards.
  2. Apply clinical knowledge, technical skills, and critical thinking to obtain, evaluate, and manage accurate neurodiagnostic data while providing safe, effective, and patient-centered care.
  3. Communicate professionally and collaborate effectively with patients, families, and members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team while demonstrating respect, cultural sensitivity, and professionalism in all practice settings.
  4. Exhibit ethical and professional behaviors consistent with the ASET Scope of Practice, ASET Code of Ethics, and all applicable legal, regulatory, and institutional standards governing neurodiagnostic practice.
  5. Serve the healthcare community as competent entry-level Neurodiagnostic Technologists who are prepared to meet workforce needs and committed to lifelong learning, professional growth, and continued credentialing.

What will I learn in the Neurodiagnostic Technology Certificate program?

You will learn how to record and analyze electrical activity in the brain and nervous system using specialized diagnostic equipment. Extensive training includes EEG procedures and basic beginner training in evoked potentials, polysomnograms, nerve conduction students, OR and long-term monitoring.

Committee on Accreditation for Education in Neurodiagnostic Technology

The Neurodiagnostic Technology program at Pennsylvania Institute of Technology is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (www.caahep.org) upon the recommendation of the Committee on Accreditation for Education in Neurodiagnostic Technology (CoA-NDT).

NDT Admissions Requirements

Students interested in applying to the NDT program must possess the following requirements:

  • A high school diploma and transcripts
  • College transcripts (if applicable)
  • A High School or College GPA of 2.5 or higher*
  • Prerequisite coursework:
    • One college level Mathematics course (choices below):
      • MTH130 – MATHEMATICS FOR HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS,
      • MTH145 – COLLEGE ALGEBRA & TRIGONOMETRYMTH207 – STATISTICS
      • AHT 105 – HEALTHCARE FOUNDATIONS
      • (or equivalent)
    • One college level Medical Science course (choices below):
      • BIO118 -MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY
      • BIO120 – HUMAN BODY SYSTEMS FOR HEALTH SCIENCE
      • BIO128/129 – ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY I / LAB
      • BIO228/229 – ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY II/ LAB

      • Transfer courses are accepted.
      • Students are encouraged to complete the pre-requisite coursework prior to the Summer term before the beginning of each cohort.  Cohorts start every Fall term.
  • Professional letter of recommendation
  • Willingness to work flexible hours (day, evening and night shifts)
  • A high degree of professionalism, good communications and problem-solving skills and a willingness to work in direct contact with a variety of patients

Given the limited number of in person seats available (12 total), students who have successfully completed all pre-requisite coursework and program admission requirements will be accepted and enrolled first.  Incomplete applications will not be considered for October enrollment.

Application Due Date:

Seated: June 30th and Online: April 1st for each upcoming cohort.  If this deadline is missed, potential students can reapply during the following application cycle.

*Highschool GPA of 2.5 requirements can be removed if the student receives a B or higher in all prerequisite classes.
